Acid reflux also known as gastro – esophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the lower end of the esophagus relaxes abnormally causing the acid from the stomach to go back to the esophagus. With the repeated occurrence of acid reflux will cause esophagitis which is an inflammation of the inner surface of the esophagus. The episode of acid reflux can also cause heartburn, one of the common acid reflux symptoms experienced by an individual. The term heartburn is not connected in any way to the heart. It is also termed as acid indigestion where a discomfort from the stomach that reaches to the chest and sometimes reaches to your throat. It also sometimes radiate to the back area.
Other acid reflux symptoms are regurgitation where in the acid goes up to your pharynx or to your mouth which sometimes causes other people to vomit due to its sour taste and another symptom is dyspepsia which a disease or a condition with symptoms of nausea, burping and bloating. If the condition is recurring, series of test can be done to diagnose and figure out the real cause of the condition. Some of these tests are esophagealmanometry, pH monitoring, Barium swallow, endoscopy and a biopsy. A biopsy is needed if the gastro esophageal reflux disease worsens to make sure if the condition is cancerous or not.
